Final Thriller opening
Here is the finished media product for our thriller movie opening, CAGED. There is now sound, production titles and more footage that tells a little more storyline.

Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
When I look back to the beginning of the course when we made our preliminary task, I now think about all the things i have learnt, and what i could have added to it to improve and make it better.
I then look at my final thriller opening and see many things i have included that i didn't even know about when we were creating the preliminary task. There are many different editing features, sounds, mise en scene references, camera shots, angles and methods of filming that i hadn't even considered using back at the beginning, but i think now that if i had used them it would have given the preliminary task much more of a thriller feel to it.
One of the things i think i have learnt the most about, and improved upon is audio editing. By using software such as garage band and soundtrack pro, i have been able to experiment with different sounds and techniques to help create both non-diegetic and diegetic sound that enhance the thriller atmosphere of the opening.
Another skill i have improved upon is basic footage editing. using final cut pro i have been able to add sounds and footage together and create a final opening that has little continuity mistakes and makes each cut flow easily. adding fades and different transitions to our footage has really improved upon defining the feeling of a thriller.
Also credits and titles have been one aspect of an opening to a film that i have improved upon. Creating production company logos and production team names is now something i have had practice with, which also helps me to understand when to make them pop up in-between scenes of the opening.
There have also been many different methods of filming and camera angles that i have learnt and used to improved upon my skills of being a camera man. One of the main camera methods that have helped me to enhance the thriller genre and feeling, was learning to use a track and dolly to produce a vertigo shot (trombone shot). in our thriller opening, we used the vertigo shot to convey the main characters fear and anxiety of the situation he is in. We also used quick panning shots, to create a sense of fast paced running as the character runs to open the door.
By experimenting with the preliminary task in the beginning of the course, we were able to learn from the mistakes we made in order to improve our skills and understanding of making a thriller opening. Evaluation Question 6
(6).what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout the making of our thriller opening, the use of different equipment has been one of the main production features. For this task, we have had to use equipment such as cameras, tripods and track and dollies as well digital equipment like final cut pro, photoshop and garage band on the mac's. When starting this project, I never had any experience in filming, using editing software, creating story boards and even directing actors. This project used all of these different technical aspects which in return has given me the knowledge and understanding of how films work. Each peice of equiptment has played a key part in the filming and editing for our thriller opening e.g.
Camera: Used to film the required shots for the thriller.
Tripod: Used to keep the camera still when filming, to make each shot look professional and smooth on either a still flat surface or to be used on the track and dollie.
Track and Dollie: A peice of track and a stand with wheels that a camera and tripod are placed upon that can be used for panning or, to be used in the way our group used it, to create a vertigo shot (trombone shot). The trombone shot effect was done by moving/rolling the camera forward and zooming out at the same time to create an effect where the person in the shot stays the same size but the background creepily moves, which creates a feeling of fear and psychological confusion.
Final Cut Pro: The editing software used to put together the thriller opening by cutting, fading and altering footage to get the best results.
Photoshop: used to create the production company logos for the beginning of the opening.
Garageband: used to edit and gather diegetic and nondiegetic sound for the thriller opening.

(4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for our thriller would be ages 15+.
The reason for this is because our thriller is too violent and unsuitable for a young audience and the storyline is way too complicated for young minds to understand, but it is also somthing that older teenagers and people of the ages above will still enjoy.
One of the ways we identified the audience is by the look of our main character. By making our character a student, giving him average student clothes and having him set in a classroom, older generations of teen and young adults have someone to relate to and almost understand his situation a little bit better. This is not saying that adults and older generations wont feel the same way, the film also contains mystery and a small bit of horror (involving the crazed murderer at the end of the corridor) that lots of people get a thrill out of either old or young.
(5) How did you attract/address your audience?
One of the main ways thriller movies catch the attention of an audience is through using enigma, suspense, tension, and excitement as their main elements. People that watch thriller movies love the excitement and adrenalin they get from watchng them and are always looking for elements of that "thrill" when ever they see the trailer or advert for a thriller they may want to check out.
When making our thriller, we wanted to include some way of conveying that tension and and suspense to attract people and make them want to watch it. We used enigma to give the thriller its erie feeling by filming the first half in a dark and mysteriouse hallway which was accomplished through the use of an artificial light scource. Horror was conveyed through the hooded man at the end of the hallway and the door myseriously locking the main character in. Also tension was built throughout by using diegetic and nondiegetic sound, this was done on editing software such as garageband and soundtrack pro as the camera couldn't pick up sound verry well and we needed to add music that would make the audience feel the tension.
While filming we needed to make sure he audience knew what was going on at the same time as not giving too much of the storyline away too quickly, to do this we added an email to the storyline that had some text tht was readable for the audience so they could get an idea of what the situation was. One of the most visible peices of text on that email was "don't open the file", this gave the audience the idea that if this command was ignored then bad things would follow (like they did for the main character who did ignored this).
By adressing a small part of the plot like to the audience through this text, the audience is gripped and want to keep on watching to be able to se what happens if the character opens the encrypted file.

Rough Cut
This is the rough cut for our thriller opening called CAGED!! There is not much to the opening yet, but work will be needed as we will need to produce sound and a little bit more footage to complete our project.
